Her paternal grandfather was a Spanish Socialist and after the end of the Spanish Civil War, he became a refugee in France along with his wife and his four children.
Anne Hidalgo was raised in Vaise, the 9th arrondissement of Lyon.
Growing up, she used to speak Spanish with her parents and French with her sister.
She entered the national contest for the Inspection du travail (Labour Inspectorate) in 1982 and was placed 5th.
Anne Hidalgo was 24 years old when she received her first inspector assignment in Chevilly-Larue in 1984. After a few months, she went on to receive a post in the 15th arrondissement of Paris.
She served as an officer at the Human Resources Directorate of Compagnie Générale des Eaux (then Vivendi and Vivendi Universal) from 1996 to 1997.
She regained her Spanish nationality in the year 2003 and has since had dual French–Spanish citizenship.
On July 1, 2011, Anne Hidalgo retired from the civil service at the age of 52.
She administered the introduction of a scheme called “Paris Respire” (literally “Paris Breathes”) in order to combat air pollution in the city from May 2016. The plan included banning all cars from certain areas of Paris on the first Sunday of the month while also making public transport and the city’s bicycle and electric vehicle schemes free for the day.
Along with many other noted public figures such as Laurent Fabius, Nicolas Hulot, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ban Ki-moon, Anne Hidalgo joined President Emmanuel Macron in calling for the adoption of a Global Pact for the Environment on June 24, 2017.
Anne Hidalgo was appointed to the eight-member Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) by the United Nations Secretary General António Guterres in 2017.
She announced her candidacy in the 2022 presidential election on September 12, 2021.
Anne Hidalgo was criticized for her trip to French Polynesia in 2023 as the trip was described as a “holiday” by her political opponents. However, she went on to respond to the criticism by publishing a list of meetings she attended.
