Marcus Stoinis is an Australian professional cricketer who has represented the country in the limited-overs formats of the sport (ODIs, T20Is), as an all-rounder. He had started his career by representing his home state of Western Australia at the under-17 and under-19 tiers and was also a member of the Australian squad that had finished in 6th place at the 2008 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, as he did not find enough opportunities to represent Western Australia (2008-09–2009-10) in senior cricket, he had made a move to Victoria (2012-13–2016-17) for a few years before returning to Western Australia (2017/18–Present). He had also, for a short while in 2018, represented Kent County Cricket Club in the English county cricket circuit.

    Marcus Stoinis Facts

  • After a lukewarm start to his career, things turned around for Marcus when he was promoted to open the batting for the Melbourne Stars in 2018. He responded brilliantly by becoming the leading run-getter for the team in the 2018-19 season of the BBL, with 533 runs. For good measure, he had also picked up 14 wickets.
  • In January 2017, in an ODI match against New Zealand, he had picked up 3 wickets in the first innings and then scored a mammoth 146 not out after coming in to bat when Australia was 5/54 chasing a target of 287. This was the highest ODI score by an Australian batsman from the number 7 position. He was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ award despite Australia losing the game by 6 runs.
  • A flamboyant all-rounder who can light up the death overs with his attacking batting, he has represented several T20 franchises around the world such as Delhi Daredevils (2015), Kings XI Punjab (2016–2018), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2019), and Delhi Capitals (2020-Present) in the IPL (Indian Premier League); Perth Scorchers (2012-13-Present) and Melbourne Stars (2013-14–Present) in the BBL (Big Bash League); and Barbados Tridents (2020) in the CPL (Caribbean Premier League).
  • In the Melbourne derby (BBL contest between Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades) in January 2020, he was involved in a controversy that had sparked widespread outrage. He was caught directing a homophobic slur at fellow Australian international Kane Richardson. He was fined USD 7.5k post the incident and had expressed deep regret for his actions.
  • Exactly a week later, on January 12, 2020, he had compiled a magical 147 in a game against the Sydney Sixers, setting the new record for the highest individual score in the BBL.
  • At the Australian Cricket Awards 2023, which was held in January 2023, Marcus won the Men’s T20 Player of the Year award.
  • In April 2023, Marcus sustained a finger injury during an IPL match against Punjab Kings.
