The concert commemorated the opening of her hometown’s Vila Velha Theatre. During the same year, she performed in Nova Bossa Velha, Velha Bossa Nova (New Old Wave, Old New Wave), both in the same venue and with the same vocalists.

She then left Salvador for Rio de Janeiro to live with her cousin Nvea, following in the footsteps of Bethânia, whose concert Opinio (Opinion) had been a huge success there.

Gal’s self-titled solo debut album from 1969 featured the songs “Baby” and “Divino Maravilhoso.” The album is regarded as a Tropicalismo classic, balancing Brazilian and North American psychedelic influences.

Gal Costa was a popular Brazilian singer. She was a key figure in the Brazilian tropicalia music scene in the late 1960s, and she appeared on the critically acclaimed compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses (1968). In 2011, she won the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Renowned Brazilian musician, Gal Costa was born to Mariah Costa Penna (mother) and Arnaldo Burgos (father). Mariah Costa Penna, Gal’s mother, spent hours listening to classical music during her pregnancy in the hopes that Gal would be interested in music. Gal’s father, Arnaldo Burgos, died when Gal was 15 years old, and the two never met.
